“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work” Colin Powell.
We all had different lofty dreams and fantasies while growing up and we were very passionate about discussing them vividly that when we reminisce with some friends with whom we shared our ideas when we were children/teenagers, they still couldn’t believe we are doing something else now! Most dreams didn’t become reality because some changed their minds and detoured to some other paths, some strayed completely to the wrong paths, some were not positively charged enough to pursue their dreams, some gave up because they were discouraged by the seemingly uncontrollable/ mitigating circumstances beyond their control, others didn’t break down their dreams into achievable bits, hence they lost focus, etc. Therefore, parents have a lot to do to ensure that children don’t sacrifice their dreams on such altars. Remember, having a great dream is not enough, adequate preparation must be made to bring the dream to life.
Raising versatile kids is crucial and imperative in the fast-paced world we live in. Versatility will help children grow into competitive adults. Also, their ability to multi-task would have developed impeccably before they become adults if we start nurturing their skills /passions / interests alongside their education now. Summer vacation is around the corner, what have you planned for your children in order to broaden their knowledge as well as achieve their interests? Generators, solar panel and inverters are responses to problem of incessant power failure. Some people invented them. Who says your child can’t invent something useful in his/her generation? Children are capable of more if we don’t get in the way of their creative minds with our opinions and ideas all the time. If we give them wings and show them how to fly, they will soar higher than us.
The first thing to do is to give them the right upbringing. Followed by good formal and informal education. Then we must not be weary of encouraging them to explore other skills and talents they possess. Most importantly, we must pray without ceasing coupled with maintaining jovial and cordial relationship with them. After all these, the sky is the beginning. Let’s not leave room for them to have regrets in future. Plan this summer holiday carefully such that your children can acquire new skills.
- Allow them participate in sports
- Join clubs for voice training, play musical instruments, learn contemporary dance, join jet club, writers club, chess club, karate club, etc.
- At home, apportion time for watching television and reading. Reading time is crucial and you must ensure they read different genres.
- Coding for those that love technology.
- If your children have building blocks, show them how to build other complex things with the blocks. Give them puzzles and look at what they have done.
- Art and craft, paper mache craft, and pottery are fantastic ways of engaging children to be creative. Though they could be messy and need lots of supervision, they keep children busy.
The list is endless but what is most important is to plan for your children to acquire new skills during the upcoming summer holiday. Remember, all great achievements require time; concerted steps in the right direction today, will go a long way in making our children forces to reckon with in future.
